  7.                          How to read the Record System Report

  10.           The Record System, sometimes called the Modified Register System,
  11.           is a numbering system used in compiled genealogies.  It is a
  12.           modified version of the "Register" or "New England System" used
  13.           by the "New England Historical and Genealogical Register".  Its
  14.           use was pioneered by the "New York Genealogical and Biographical
  15.           Record".  It is also used in the "National Genealogical Society
  16.           Quarterly".  The report created by PAFAbility differs from the
  17.           standard in that no distinction is made between male and female
  18.           descendant lines (both are carried to their conclusion) and only
  19.           the name of a child is shown if the child's line is continued.

  21.           In the list of children of an individual, each child is assigned
  22.           a small case Roman numeral (i, ii, etc.) to indicate birth order. 
  23.           Each individual is also assigned a unique Arabic numeral (1, 2,
  24.           etc) which precedes the birth-order number.  If a child has
  25.           descendants, then just the name is shown and a plus sign (+) is
  26.           placed next to the Arabic number to indicate that the line is
  27.           continued later in the report.

  45.           The index to the report lists the unique Arabic number assigned
  46.           to the individual.  If the number is followed by an "S", then the
  47.           individual is the spouse of the person with that number (spouses
  48.           are not given unique numbers).  Then the individual's name is
  49.           listed and the page(s) where he can be found.  In this version of
  50.           the report, women are listed by their maiden names only.
